Buy cranes in India: define lifting duty, compare crane types, verify safety systems, and manage installation and commissioning.

Short answer
Specify a crane from the actual lifting duty: rated load, lift height, span, runway conditions, operating frequency, load handling and safety environment. Have a qualified engineer validate the building and runway interfaces, then compare vendors on complete scope, applicable standards, safety features, installation capability, testing and service response—not just capacity and price.
1. Build a complete duty specification

2. Choose the configuration with engineering input
Overhead/EOT crane
Common for repetitive movement across a defined bay. Confirm runway beam condition, electrification, approach dimensions and hook coverage.
Gantry crane
Useful where a building runway is unavailable or outdoor coverage is needed. Confirm rail/foundation design, wind effects and travel area controls.
Jib or workstation crane
Useful for local work cells and lower coverage requirements. Confirm column/foundation or wall support and interface with existing operations.
3. Evaluate the complete vendor scope
- Request a technical offer listing hoist, bridge, controls, electrification, runway interface, safety devices, painting, installation, testing and exclusions.
- Review duty classification, motor/gearbox/brake specification, overload protection, limit switches, emergency stop and operator controls.
- Check engineering drawings, load data, service coverage, spare-parts availability and references for comparable applications.
4. Control installation and commissioning
- Assign responsibility for runway survey, civil/structural modifications, power supply and statutory or site approvals before delivery.
- Require installation method statements, safety plan, test procedure, load-test documentation, operator training and maintenance manual.
- Do not operate the crane beyond the commissioned scope; modifications to hook, lifting attachment, controls or runway need competent engineering review.
5. Avoid capacity-only buying
- A 10-tonne nameplate does not make two cranes equivalent: duty cycle, span, speed, controls and safety equipment can change lifecycle value substantially.
- Never assume the existing building or runway can accept a new crane. Obtain a qualified structural assessment.
- Set response-time and preventive-maintenance expectations in the contract; crane downtime can cost more than a lower purchase price saves.
