TMT Bar Price in India: Rates by Grade, Size and Quantity
TMT bar rates by Fe grade and diameter, what moves the price per kg, bulk discounts, and how to check BIS evidence before you pay.

Short answer
TMT bars run roughly Rs 55 to Rs 78 per kilogram across India in August 2026, or Rs 55,000 to Rs 78,000 a tonne. Grade, diameter, brand, city and timing move that by Rs 5 to Rs 8 either way, and orders above ten tonnes typically take Rs 2 to Rs 3 per kg off. Buy against the engineer's bar-bending schedule, never on price alone.
1. What TMT bars cost right now
Rates move weekly with billet and scrap prices, so treat these as the working band and ask for a live quote against your schedule. Figures are August 2026, ex-yard, before freight and GST.

2. What actually moves the price per kg
The spread between the cheapest and dearest quote for the same bar is routinely Rs 15 to Rs 20 a kilogram. Five things explain almost all of it.
Grade and ductility class
Each step up the Fe scale adds cost. Fe 550 carries roughly Rs 5-7 per kg over Fe 415 at the same diameter, and the D suffix for higher ductility adds a little more again.
Diameter
Smaller bars cost more per kilogram because rolling them takes more passes. An 8 mm bar runs above the yard average; 16 mm and up sit below it. Mixed-diameter orders are priced by weighted average, not by the headline rate.
Primary mill versus secondary
Primary producers command a premium over secondary and re-rolled steel. That premium buys consistent chemistry and traceable heat numbers, which is exactly what the mill test certificate has to demonstrate.
Quantity
Orders above ten tonnes usually take Rs 2 to Rs 3 per kg off distributor rates. Below a tonne you are buying at retail counters and paying for it.
City, freight and timing
Coastal and port-adjacent cities price differently from inland ones, and delivered rates carry freight that ex-yard quotes do not. Rates move weekly, so a quotation more than a week old is not a quotation.
3. Reading a quote so you can compare it
- Confirm per kg or per tonne, and ex-yard or delivered. A delivered rate and an ex-yard rate are not comparable, and freight on steel is not trivial.
- Confirm whether GST is included. Quotes on this product are commonly given excluding it.
- Ask whether cutting and bending are in scope. Fabrication is often quoted separately and can move the landed cost materially.
- For a mixed schedule, ask for the rate per diameter rather than one blended number — that is where a cheap-looking quote usually hides.
- Ask what the rate is valid until. On steel, a week is a long time.
4. Start with the structural specification
- Use the project drawing and bar-bending schedule to set grade, diameter, quantity, length and approved make requirements.
- Do not substitute diameter or grade based on a supplier suggestion without written engineer approval.
- Confirm whether the price is per kg, per tonne, ex-yard or delivered to site, and whether cutting/bending is included.

6. Verify compliance and test records
BIS licence
Ask the supplier or mill for the BIS licence information relevant to TMT steel bars, then check the licence and product scope through the official BIS care portal.
Mill test certificate
Request the MTC for the actual heat or lot being dispatched. It should identify the product, lot/heat and reported test values. Have your engineer or QA team review it.
Independent testing
For critical projects or when required by contract, send representative samples to an appropriate laboratory under the project's sampling and test plan.
7. Control quantity and delivery
- Agree the weighbridge process, bundle marking and tolerance treatment before dispatch.
- At receipt, check bundle tags, visible corrosion, bends, diameter mix and document match before unloading is closed out.
- Keep MTCs, invoices, weighbridge slips and site receiving records against each delivery lot.
8. Avoid unsafe shortcuts
- Do not accept unmarked bars or a generic certificate that cannot be linked to the delivered lot.
- Do not make structural decisions from nominal price comparisons; compare grade, delivered weight, test evidence, freight and availability.
- Seek engineer approval for any change in brand, grade, bar size or splice/detailing method.

Use the grade specified by the structural engineer and project drawings. Grade choice is a structural-design decision and should not be changed solely for price or availability. Record any approved substitution in writing before procurement or use.
Is a mill test certificate enough?
It is important traceability evidence, but project requirements may also call for third-party testing and site inspection. The certificate must be tied to the delivered heat or lot and reviewed alongside bundle markings and the project sampling plan.
